Community Involvement

Making a Difference

In our Akron and Canton offices, our mission is to inspire people to realize their financial security dreams, backed by the strength of Northwestern Mutual.  Consistent with our mission, we value philanthropy as way to make a significant impact on the dreams of families in our local community.  We have chosen childhood cancer as a cause that we are putting our collective energy into, aligning directly with the goals of the Northwestern Mutual Foundation and our partnership with Alex's Lemonade Stand Foundation.

We dream of a day when children and their families won't face the fear and uncertainty of a cancer diagnosis.  Together, with our partners, we're working to accelerate the search for cures for childhood cancer and provide support for families fighting the disease.  Since 2012, we've made great strides in raising awareness and funding for the cause through our nonprofit partner, Alex's Lemonade Stand Foundation.

Raising Awareness and Funding for Childhood Cancer Research

Childhood cancer is the leading cause of death by disease in children under the age of 15 years old, according to the National Cancer Institute.  Yet financial support for childhood cancer research remains vastly underfunded.  We are on a mission to change that.

Every year, members of our organization impact the fight against childhood cancer by raising funds for life-saving research during the annual "Race for Research” benefiting Alex's Lemonade Stand Foundation.  Since 2013, our offices in Northern Ohio have raised over $46,000 through this campaign that has funded over 920 hours of childhood cancer research!

Leading by Example

In addition to Northwestern Mutual - Akron/Canton's commitment to fighting childhood cancer, our team members donate their time and talent – as well as their financial support to charities and causes that matter to them and our community.  They are rebuilding neighborhoods, helping students succeed, broadening perspectives and opportunities for the disadvantaged, and improving the quality of life for people with life-altering illnesses.

APRIL 2015 | Northwestern Mutual's Planning Makes a Difference Competition

The annual Planning Makes a Difference Competition is sponsored by Northwestern Mutual and was created to give undergraduate students enrolled in degree programs registered with the CFP Board the opportunity to experience real-world financial planning.  Participants also reap a rich, experiential learning opportunity while enhancing resumes and potentially winning a scholarship.

Competition includes the examination of case study information about a young family.  Then, an analysis of the findings, including a budget, financial plan, recommendations and rationale is submitted.  The analysis will be judged and top contestants selected to move on in the competition.  Top contestants have the opportunity to learn from successful Northwestern Mutual financial representatives, working with sophisticated financial planning tools for case preparation and plan design. They’ll use their new knowledge to strengthen financial plans and recommendations and prepare for the final stage of competition.  The finalists move on to the next phase of the competition: presenting their recommendations to a mock client, in front of a panel of judges, peers and university faculty/staff, as well as an interested audience.
